It worked just fine, it only took a few hours to learn how to place my hands correctly and finding the correct keys with my fingers. I used Type-fu when I finally decided to learn how to touch type properly. In Type Fu, you can practice on code samples by selecting "Code" in the "Lesson" drop down. Alternatively you could practice on a sample of code. This at least forced me to remember which symbols are at which key positions. I've found it useful, though boring, to exercise on text that is purely a random sequence of symbols. So it's helpful to do some targeted touch typing exercises for symbols. Type-Fu and in the "Lesson" drop down select "Code.". But short of that, I found it pretty effective to do some typing practice where the text is computer code. What really forced me to learn is when I got a keyboard with blank keycaps. I can type at 100wpm with my 2 index fingers - should I learn to touch type? There are some (like ) that support the Russian layout. If you want some training tools, google "keyboard trainer". That's how I learned to touch type (albeit I'm not a pro at it) and I've never done any typing class. It starts with very few letters, and adds new ones progressively, so you only have to mind about a new letter at the time and can properly focus on using the right finger. LPT: You really should pay attention typing class in school. Fast forward three weeks practising on monkeytype (total typing time is 11 hours 30 minutes) and my WPM is around 55-60, with 60 being my average in the last 10. After completing the keyboard, I started practicing on monkeytype english 1k (was the most recommended) and my typing speed was ~30. It took me about 8 hours (1 week) to complete the whole keyboard on. Depending on your preference, learn an optimized layout or stick to QWERTY. Other than that, I'd suggest you start out by using a site like to train proper touch typing technique for a couple of weeks / months and see where that takes you.
